Space QotDs and Chris Hadfield!March 16, 2013
“As we got further and further away, it [the Earth] diminished in size. Finally it shrank to the size of a marble, the most beautiful you can imagine. That beautiful, warm, living object looked so fragile, so delicate, that if you touched it with a finger it would crumble and fall apart. Seeing this has to change a man.”
— James B. Irwin (Apollo 15)
As you likely know, Chris Hadfield just took command of the International Space Station. Besides recording a duet with the Barenaked Ladies from low earth orbit (!) he’s also been taking a huge whack of stunning photographs, and posting them to his twitter feed. Here’s one of my favs. And someone put together this great page that geolocates the photos from Chris and the other ISS photographers. Nicely done.
Chris is also an eloquent speaker… Zen Pencils (whom I just discovered and is awesome) put an answer Chris gave to a question from a student into this wonderful illustration.
And to round out the quotes from space, here’s a quote from Edgar Mitchell, from his experience on the moon. (And these newfound and profound shifts are something most of the ISS tourists report as well — it has to change people, indeed)
